I teach students in an alternative program in a small rural Alaskan fishing village. All of my students have failed and/or dropped out of school. They are all native Alaskans, but sadly many know little of the proud history and culture of native Americans.
Our village is a rural fishing village which is off the road system in Alaska.
All of my students are native Alaskans whose families depend on fishing, hunting, and gathering. While they have failed in school, our alternative program is trying to give them a fresh start and encourage them to complete their high school education.
My Project
As students who have failed, many have a poor self-image. By studying Native American history and culture, it is hoped that my students can find a kinship with a similar history and culture experienced by Alaskan natives. While the history of native Alaskans has not been as violent as that of their southern brothers and sisters, they have also experienced injustice at the hand of the invading European culture.
Many books leave out the full story of Native Americans and Native Alaskans.
It is hoped that these books will fill in the gaps. I thank you in advance for remembering my students.
