This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For the love of reading!! Introducing a great book to a wary student is what catches them in the land of books. Unfortunately, the children who are reading below grade level often have less choice of books at their level.

There are 17 lovely students in my Second Grade class.

Our small school is located in the inner-city in California. There are two students who have recently started learning English, and another half of my class speak English as a second language. All 17 of my students are hard-workers and are eager to utilize our newly-designed classroom library.

My Project

This is my first request to update and improve my classroom library. Over the summer I spent my own money investing in a new rug and some beanbags to make the book corner a comfortable place. I also spent hours labeling and organizing the level of each book so that the children can quickly access books at their independent reading level. What I discovered is that there were only about 5 books at each of the lower levels. The students will be ecstatic to know that they will have additional books to choose from. The next project I request will be additional leveled books.

As a girl, I was bored by the books that I was told I "had" to read.

Reading bored me. It took me until adulthood to learn to enjoy reading. If there is one thing I hope my students walk away with at the end of Second Grade, it is a love of reading. By providing the lower readers with more choice, you have the potential to provide them with the book that they realize they love.
