My Students

Computers are a rare luxury for my fifth grade students, since most do not have them at home. Although our school does not have a computer lab, thanks to a recently opened public library nearby our school, classroom teachers can now take students to use their computer lab on site.

My students in the fifth grade represent several different countries in the world: Yemen, Mexico, Tonga, among others.

Many of them are English Language Learners, and reading and writing in English continues to be a tremendous challenge. The fifth grade writing standards are particularly demanding, and each child is expected to write clear, coherent, and focused essays throughout the year. In order to help my students succeed in becoming organized and prolific writers, my goal is to create as many opportunities as possible for my students to write, and to write with ease. Using word processors to write on computers allows writing to be less of a chore and more of an experience of expressing one's ideas and thoughts in an effortless manner.

My Project

I am requesting a USB flash drive for each student so that the writing they produce can be saved and the process of writing, revising, and editing may be ongoing and efficient. Since the computers we use belong to the general public, we need these flash drives to record our work and to transfer the files from one computer to another as needed. In addition to using the flash drives for word processing, my students will also develop Power Point presentations during the year that highlight topics of research and personal experiences to be shared with one another. With these USB drives we can save our work with ease and pick up where we leave off upon each return to the library computer lab.
