This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"There was one man that was interested in the color of music, the connection between light and music, and that was Einstein."
Leon Theremin- inventor of the Theremin musical instrument
I teach in one of the least funded schools in America.
The school looks like 1970 when it was built. The janitors still smoke on the job as if it were 1950. This is inner city NYC. The students are from all over: Africa, DR, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and Haiti. Many do not speak the language in which I teach. Due to cultural divides and poverty, there is generally a high frustration level every day in this school.
My Project
The students do not speak the same languages or agree on acceptable personal space issues or appropriate offensive responses. In my five years at this school, I have learned to utilize two functions of human response to elevate interest in topics- humor and fascination. Seeing or experiencing something strange or funny insights a unified field of learners-it excites them with joy.
I hope to be able to explore exactly what Mr. Theremin intended for this instrument- to explore the relationship between the color of music and the relationship between light and music.
I am excited to share with my students the elemental relationship that exists between the material and the immaterial as well as color- and that is vibration.
By associating color with sound, students can mix colors to sound, make line drawings to sound, see and hear a real relationship between refracted spectral sound, and varied pitch of a tone. Ultimately, I am interested in teaching harmony as it relates to sound and image.
