My Students

Finding quality books that excite middle school students to read is a difficult task...but not impossible...

We are an 8th grade class at charter school located in California.

Pedagogically, we are a developmentally-based institution in which the arts (both creative and performance) play a huge role, yet academics (at the right time and in the right doses) are equally important. My energetic, mostly male class thrives on challenges, but also needs interesting material to inspire them.

My Project

The future is here... within his novel, Ray Bradbury accurately predicted many aspects of it in the 1950's. So many of the images of this dystopia mirror our world today. The thought of burning books may resonant with a good portion of my boy-heavy class, but what price does society pay when we lose our written knowledge. This question, and many other pertinent discussions on modern day topics, easily arises from reading *Fahrenheit 451*

*Fahrenheit 451* is an amazingly well-written classic that was a favorite of my students at my previous school.

Those students spoke about the book the rest of the year as events in contemporary life reminded them of it. I truly wish to impact my students with the awareness that good books are a precious resource to be valued, read, and understood.
