My Students

Numbers Sense! Most students know their numbers, but a vast majority are not given the time, or experience to gain a deeper understanding of what those numbers mean. Without this, more complex math skills will be lost to these children.

I have a group of beautiful first grade students in my very diverse classroom.

They come from different socioeconomic backgrounds and you can hear 4 languages being spoken amongst them. They are bright and energetic and eager to learn. Our first grade is one of fourteen classrooms in this small, dynamic school located in an urban setting.

My Project

Daily math practice is a part of our routine. I plan on helping students explore, experiment with, and build on basic number concepts using number lines, magnetic numbers, and other key materials. With the magnetic write on/wipe off boards, each child will all be able to answer questions, show his/her work, and participate in building understanding at the same time.

Recently a new math textbook was adopted for our district.

This math program does little to help develop students understanding of numbers, assuming this is an easy skill to master. Funding this project means I will be able to build my students' basic number sense for future success in mathematics. These materials will be one way of bridging the gap between a mediocre math curriculum and my students' needs.
