Creating Young Readers by Reading Raiders

My students need 30 copies of a gripping young adult read, "Raiders Night" to prepare them for journal and essay writing.

My Students

"This book is boring," so many students lament. My goal was to find fare that would hold their collective interests and make them think critically about their daily choices.

I teach 130 students in rural Mississippi.

They come to me from many small areas to attend our schoolhouse. The students are funny yet complicated, curious yet reserved, and demanding yet patient. They are on the edge of adulthood, all the while wondering what is going to happen next in their lives.

My Project

My students need a gripping young adult read to prepare them for journal and essay writing. So many of my state objectives are tied to reading and comprehension. I want my scholars to have a book filled with an authenticity that makes them argue, debate, and journal about the happenings of these fictional characters. The students will walk away with mixed emotions after reading this novel. They will be angry at the main character's decisions. Yet they will be ready to fully justify their dissent and anger.

My students want to explore a world outside of their current rural environs.

In smaller communities, sports lead the way. This story focuses on just that. The students will immediately relate and offer their own thoughts and feelings on life and love and kinship. Accordingly, the students will discover a love of great literature along the way.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
