My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My scholars have a great appetite for books. "I Need You!" to help me capitalize on this love for books. Help me stock our classroom library with books that captures imaginations.

I have 74 highly energetic, curious, kind and enthusiastic sixth grade scholars.

We are at a charter school on the west side of Chicago, in the North Lawndale neighborhood. For many of my students, checking out books from the public library isn't an option due to various reasons. As a result, the classroom library is the only access they have to grade level appropriate reading materials. Their enthusiasm and passion for reading, serves as true inspiration for me to continuously acquire new materials for them.

My Project

When you read the right book at the right time, it doesn’t just tell you a story or give you information. It changes your perspective. Books change lives! I’m living proof. I know books changes my life because they made it possible for a young girl growing up on the western coast of Africa to dream. I dreamt of the worlds and people I read about. As my love for reading grew, I developed a fascination for those worlds and compassion for those people. I truly believe that part of who I am today is the result of my love of reading. This is why I want my scholars to become exposed to a variety of reading materials that are of interest to them. With a variety of interesting books right at their finger tips, my scholars will be able to force their brain cells to engage in activity as they paint a vivid image in their mind about the story that they are reading, they are bound to come across the works of various authors and will be exposed to several different literary styles.

Having a classroom library stocked with a variety of books will allow them to learn new words, phrases, idioms and to use them in several different ways as well.

They will develop the ability to think out of the box or if they choose to “blow up the box” to help them to see patterns, novel connections or new solutions where others are not able to relate. By providing access to a rich classroom library, I am able to encourage greater amounts of reading, and open my scholars minds to new worlds.
