A Hunger For Reading With The Hunger Games

My students need 50 copies of "The Hunger Games" to begin our theme in reading class this year - A Hunger For Reading.

My Students

Can you remember the one book that gave you the desire and hunger to read? I have seen this happen to students and watched them turn into avid readers with the exposure to just the right book. I believe the Hunger Games is just the book that my students need.

To be a successful member of the future professional world.

This is what I desire for each of my students. This is a great challenge in the community in which I teach. Many families are out of work, living in poverty, and school is just not a priority. I begin everyday by giving my students a ticket. I tell them that this ticket is their ticket to a great successful future, and all they have to do is cash it in by giving 100% effort in and out of school. School is their ticket. This year I am faced with teaching almost 100 students reading. Of those 100 students, over 52 of them are preforming below grade level in reading. Through one on one discussions with them as this school year opens, I am faced with a multitude of these students lacking any kind of interest in reading and have no favorite book. I want to change this for them. I want them to become a part of this book just as I did when I read it. I am excited to join my students on this adventure.

My Project

The Hunger Games as a novel that will be the perfect read for all the boys and the girls in my room. It is about the power that a young, poor, girl achieves while participating in the Hunger Games. She does not give up even though she is constantly being challenged and some do not believe in her. I want my students to find that they to can do and be anything they want to do or be through hard work and effort. Another way that my students can connect to their reading of the Hunger Games is by learning about the filming of the movie that is to be released this coming March. It was filmed in our great state of North Carolina.

I just know that they will be excited and blessed when you help us add this book to our classroom library.

I can't wait for them to beg to read the next two books in this series. We will dive into our reading as soon as the books arrive and I can't wait. You will make such a difference in the lives of all of these children. Thank you!
