CLAY in the Art Classroom

My students need clay and glazes to learn sculpture and hand building techniques in Art class.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I can still vividly remember the first time I used clay in Art class. I was in the first grade and I remember feeling like my heart lit. Now as an educator I love seeing the same face of excitement on my students' faces when they use clay.

I am requesting glazes and 300 lbs of clay.

These resources will enhance the education of roughly 800 students at a Title One school in Texas. At my school approximately 90% of our population is Hispanic with at least 88% of our students being limited in English. Additionally, approximately 91.5% of the population is economically disadvantaged, and 92.5% is at risk. These are students that do not have the same access to art supplies that some of the wealthier schools in the surrounding cities would have.

My Project

Teaching clay building at my school will improve the student's academic achievement by teaching Texas Art standards, and increasing manipulative skills. Here are several ways in which this will be achieved: First, exposing the students to clay building will allow them to create objects in 3-D. At this age it is very difficult for students to realize that a sculpture is seen from all side,s and not just the front. This is important because students will learn to add details and textures to all sides. Clay building is also important because it teaches good craftsmanship. Each student must make a sculpture that is sound and does not break easily. This is important because students at this age do not have enough experience with building or creating work that is sound. It is my goal to introduce my students to basic and advanced hand building techniques with these projects: rolled coil vases, Egyptian canopic jars, clay rattles, pinch pot monsters, and pinch pot cups.

Donations to this project will help make clay building a reality for not just a handful of students, but for 800 students that are economically disadvantaged.

Having the clay and glazes will undoubtedly put a smile on each and every one of my students' faces. Not only will the students be learning valuable skills, but getting to play with clay will be the highlight of every student's year in Art. Please help me make this dream of having clay at our school a reality.
