There is a Chinese proverb that states, "Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Involve me and I understand." When students have personal wipe boards they are involved in their learning and accountable for their participation in class.
My school is a neighborhood public school located in a city with a population of about 110,000 people.
The students in my third grade classroom come from a wide variety of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Some students come from homes with access to books and technology, while others have very little home support. The academic abilities of the students are as diverse as their backgrounds, from special education, full inclusion students to highly proficient students and all levels in between.
My Project
Gone are the days where students sat in desks all day and listened to their teachers talk at them. In my classroom students are active participants in the learning process and they take ownership over their education. With these wipe boards the students have the opportunity to practice in a safe space what they are being taught. During a lesson I, the teacher, will model the lesson for the class in the overhead. Next, the students will practice the new skill on their wipe boards individually or as a team. The wipe boards are especially useful because of the "easy wipe off," it's okay to make mistakes and take risks because of the impermanence of the wipe board. I can quickly scan the boards to check their work for understanding and mistakes, then decide what is clear, what needs more practice, what needs to be taught again.
By supporting this project through the purchase of wipe boards and markers, you can feel confident that you will be improving the education of these third graders.
The wipe boards will provide a workspace for students to tackle math problems, compare their work with partners, and discuss their thinking. Students will also practice targeted grammar and punctuation lessons to improve their writing. As the teacher I will make observations of students' understanding to inform my teaching and tailor instruction. Thank you for your support.
