Our high school is huge and it is easy for kids to slip through the cracks and go through unnoticed. My goal is to build and create a community within the class, to engage the students and to have some fun while learning Spanish.
Our high school has more than 3,000 students, so it is a small town.
My students are between the ages of 13-18. They come from diverse backgrounds— both racially and economically. Some speak languages other than English at home and it is a diverse place. Our students are like any other kids — full of dreams, potential and talent.
My Project
The flip cameras will allow students to make videos and other creative projects while using the Spanish language. Technology is a part of our culture and it is a tool for student engagement and learning. The class set of dictionaries are so students can do writing activities and if they don't know how to say a word, they can look it up. The dictionaries are also helpful tools on days when we read— some students like to know what every single word means. The colored paper is so I can color code important handouts for the students. There are some items they will use regularly and I have noticed that it is easier for students to find them if they are colored. Lastly, the laminator- I use a lot of photos and various visuals for the class. In order to keep the items looking neat, it is nice to be able to laminate them and Kinko breaks the bank!
I love teaching and consider myself lucky to have the job!
