My Students

Fluency is when students read at a good pace with expression. My 1st graders need to practice fluency daily. This will make them stronger readers as reading becomes "natural" to them.

I teach first grade in rural Northern California.

I have 25 inquisitive children who love to learn. They love science, social studies, and learning words in a new language. They are enthusiastic and embrace learning. It is so much fun to introduce them to new subjects and experiences because they approach new experiences with such enthusiasm.

My Project

My students need seven fluency games/kits, sight word manipulatives, Three Billy Goats Gruff story puppets, and six student timers. Building fluency is crucial for students to become better readers. We practice fluency daily, but practicing can be boring with the same passages and format that our school uses year after year. I am asking for seven fluency kits to give my students more interesting materials to practice fluency. Building a strong fluency creates faster readers which creates better readers. I am asking for timers to my students can time themselves when practicing fluency by themselves or with a buddy. The story puppet kit is to be added to our other story kits as a great motivator to practice reading. The sight words are another piece of the fluency puzzle. Students need to read their sight words and this resource will give my kids the opportunity to practice in an engaging way.

By funding this project, you will be getting engaging materials into the hands of my students.

They will be wanting to practice their fluency with the kits, puppets, and games asked for in this project. Fluency has become part of our daily routine, but students need to have interesting materials to keep their interest in wanting to practice reading.
