Tornado Recovery Enrichment for Special Needs

My Students

On May 22nd, half of my special needs students lost their homes and all of their possessions in a devastating tornado. Even though our school survived, we are in need of new materials to engage them in learning new skills, and put smiles on their faces. Your donations can help make that possible!

I teach 20 special needs students ranging in age from Kindergarten through fifth grade, in a 26 year old trailer behind our school.

I teach a cross categorical group ranging from Learning Disabled, to Autistic, to Other Health Impaired due to severe seizures, to Brain Injured. My paras and I focus on what the kids CAN do, and then encourage them in the areas where they struggle. Often, my children struggle with motivation. The kids get so excited when we get new materials for our classroom. However, our district is stretched to the limit, trying to provide the basics after losing several schools due to the tornado. This year, we find ourselves making do in many areas. I want better for my special needs kids. I want them to have new, fun activities to explore and to help them learn new skills.

My Project

Since I take many of my students during social studies class time from their regular classrooms, they miss out on some key social studies information. Most of the materials I am requesting are geared to help them learn more about their world, both in the past as well as the present. My goal is for them to become well-rounded productive, informed citizens. I also need innovative, fun ways to teach my older students math concepts for my most reluctant learners. The math materials I am requesting will help fill that need.

Your donations to this project will make such a difference in the lives of my special needs students.

These materials will help give them exciting new activities to do, take their minds off of losing their homes, with many living in the FEMA trailers, and hopefully, even distract them when dark clouds come in and thunder crashes.
