My Students

New country, new language, new reality... this is the reality for many of my students. Students in my class come from countries around the world. They speak many languages and are proud of their culture. They are also proud to be learning English, yet we don't always have the materials they need.

My students are a vivacious group of 5th graders who love to learn.

We started together in 4th grade and are looping up to 5th grade as a group. This group of students is very diverse. Half of our class has IEPs (which means they receive Special Education Services). Some of our students go a Resource Room for additional help, some go to a Gifted teacher for additional challenges, and some go to a Visually Impaired teacher to learn Braille. Another group of students in our class receive ESL instruction to help guide them as they learn the English language. It is this group of students that I am targeting with this request. As an upper-elementary teacher I receive only upper-elementary resources. Even our new reading program gives me ESL materials that are too difficult for my students who are new to this country. We also don't have materials to help us as we meet as a small group.

My Project

The resources I am requesting include a table top easel that will help me instruct a small group of students. The writing organizer will ensure we have all the materials we need while reading and engaging with texts. Finally, the books I requested will allow my students who are learning the English language to access texts at their independent reading level. All too often, I only have reading materials at the 4th or 5th grade level. For my student newest to the United States, these books are too hard. Having books that are at an appropriate reading level will help my students feel successful and ensure they learn to read new and more difficult texts.

My students will use these materials to participate in small group reading instruction.

By using the easel, organizer, and books at their Independent Reading Level, my students will feel successful and learn to speak and read English.
