My Students

Did fractions make you groan when you were in elementary school? Do they scare you even today? My students have a tough time with fractions. They come to math time dreading fraction and decimal lessons and I want to be able to show them that fractions aren't scary or difficult, but fun and useful.

Our building is part of a rural Ohio school district.

The students in my classroom are very diverse in both background experiences and learning styles. We spend our day together in a self-contained classroom which allows me the opportunity to connect learning between content areas and pull in a variety of real life applications. My students are very visual and hands-on learners. They range in ability from gifted to learning disabled. Our classroom is a community and we use cooperative learning to support and grow with one another.

My Project

Building number sense in my students is a vital part of their mathematical development. By 4th grade the students have a good understanding of whole numbers. Unfortunately as we begin to work with fractions and decimals, I often see them become frustrated. We use food and visual aids, but many still don't grasp the concept and they start to give up. The resources I've requested in this project will allow the students to have hands-on manipulatives to work with as they are introduced to higher level fraction concepts. The fraction tiles and decimal place value boards will not only be visual tools, but also tactile tools that they can use to organize and compare. Games like fraction bingo will allow them to practice the concept in a new way. I am confident that after my students have the chance to use the manipulatives and games to enhance their mathematical learning, they will begin to see fractions as fun rather than fearful.

This project will not only develop number sense in my students, it will also help my students overcome a common stumbling block in their math studies.

Just saying the words "fractions" and "decimals" elicits groans from my 4th graders. By providing them with hands-on materials and minds-on games, the students will be given the chance to enjoy learning fractions and to use the materials to help build solid visual references that they can then use in future years.
