My students need a "What Is Grammar?" book set, 30 blank books, Wikki Stix, and colored pencils to enhance their own writing with colorful words that they can illustrate in their own books.
Sitting down to write can be very intimidating, but I want to help make that experience more enjoyable and seem to just flow out of their heads onto paper. In our society, children need to be prepared to write and speak in a more formal way than they talk with their friends.
Tennessee has been known as one of the lowest states on performance tests, but we are trying to change that.
With that said we have raised the bar from the lowest 5th percent to the highest 5th percent. If that wasn't enough, the students that I work with in the inner city already have so much against them that more challenges seem impossible to them. I want them to feel that they can overcome any obstacle that arises.
My Project
Using the grammar set of books presents the parts of speech, that they will need to recognize and use, in a funny way. The wikki sticks will give the students a fun and colorful way to identify the parts of speech in a variety of publications. The colored pencils are not only for illustrating their final publication(book) for the year but also in writing their rough drafts. We color code our rough drafts for the different parts that have to be included.
By the year 2014, we will be going to a national assessment for most students that will require the students to write answers rather than choose from a variety of options.
I want to help these students feel more comfortable with applying their understanding in word form.
