Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Four classes. Twenty-five second grade students. One teacher. And a mission to guide each scholar to graduate from college in 2026.

I have yet to meet my students, but I can tell you that starting at the end of August, between my four second grade classes, there will be 100 seven year-old students making my classroom their mathematical home.

Our school is a charter that serves low-income, minority students in San Jose, California. Ninety percent of my students receive free/reduced lunch, meaning their families are living on $15,000 or less a year. Many are the children of immigrants and seventy-five percent are learning English. Most students come to our school at least one year behind. Needless to say, we have a big year ahead of us! We will be learning about place values, estimating, money, multiplication, division, fractions, shapes, measurement, time and so much more! Please take the time to donate to our classroom and help my second graders soar to new heights!

My Project

Carpet time will be essential to our classroom, as it will be where we have math meetings, review the calendar, organize for centers, and listen during instruction. Without a rug with specific spots, students inadvertently move around on the floor, which crowds other scholars around them and causes minor disruptions to the learning time. When we do partner work or center games, my scholars must have a place on the floor to coordinate the materials in front on them in the most efficient way. The "a place for everyone" rug will provide the organization necessary for focused learning. My scholars will have a clear guideline to help them learn how to sit and listen attentively, without invading one another student's space. Instead of spending my time on management, my time will be much better spent providing my scholars with the essential math skills they will need for the years of learning ahead of them.
