Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the last time you were hungry, I mean really hungry?
95% of my students receive free or reduced cost lunch.
They come to school hungry and we expect them to learn when they are struggling to keep their eyes open or are preoccupied by thinking of lunch that is still four hours away. My students are bright beyond what they typically show. They like school. It is where they feel safe and warm.
My Project
All of the resources I requested are for these hungry students. A small snack that can be slipped to them when they ask "Mrs. L, I got dropped off at school late today and didn't have a chance to eat breakfast. Do you have anything?" Who knows when their last meal was. Yesterday at lunch? Or there are the students who will work their tails off for even the smallest tangible reward. Specifically, I requested small snacks like pretzels, crackers, fruit snacks, popcorn, granola bars, etc.
Food motivates my students to learn!
Once they take the risk, they love learning! It is amazing how much more we get done in the classroom when the students are not worried about their grumbling bellies!
