My Students

Technology is everywhere. Technology is an amazing tool for learning. Many struggling and/or unmotivated students seem to get a spark for learning when technology becomes part of that learning.

My students are second graders.

Don't let that fool you they love technology and love to learn using technology. They grasp information, become highly engaged and value learning more with the use of technology. Most of them have a parent or parents who serve in our great military. Many of my second grade students struggle to become the best readers they can be. One way I can help these students is with an assessment tool and a tool for improving literacy and fluency. As a child is reading the short timed stories the app tracks and gives a words per minute reading result and also lists the percentile the child is reading above or below his class level. A printed copy of the story to work on later to build fluency and practice missed words is also available. Many of my students need this app.

My Project

I am requesting an iPad2 to use in my classroom to enhance student learning. There are many Apps that are wonderful learning tools. Many of these Apps are free to use. My students and I will use this tool every school day. The possibilities for projects and learning are endless. One way my students will use this is by importing photos or taking screenshots on the iPad students can save an image of something they find or are working on and edit it to make a cool poster, background or image to add to a notebook or document. Lots of photo editing apps are available like Photogene. Another way is through Toontastic. It is fantastic tool for students to create digital stories that they can share with their peers. The App provides users step-by-step instructions on the parts of the story from setup to resolution. Students can choose to use the available settings and characters or create their own drawings.

As a teacher I love using technology.

I can see the immediate impact it has on learning by keeping students engaged. The best benefit would be for those students who are struggling in a specific area. I believe there is an App for that. What do you think?
