My students need a variety of items to use in the dramatic play area, such as play food and dishes, supplies for pretend careers (doctor, vet, and more), and books to reinforce their exploration.
What did you want to be when you grew up? Many of the children at my school want to work at a fast food restaurant or clothing store because that is all they know. At 5 years old, I need to show them various jobs that are just waiting for them!
The majority of my students face poverty, be it situational, emotional or generational.
Our student population is challenged by generational and situational poverty. This results in absentee and/or uninvolved parents, little ability to focus and follow through, negative social behaviors, and an acute lack of personal responsibility. Ours is a PK-5 neighborhood Title-1 school with 70.09% of its total student population on the free and reduced meal program. Students are a mix of socio-economic backgrounds, gender, races, and academic abilities.
My Project
These materials would help my students learn to socialize and practice their independent learning skills, which are both important characteristics for young children to acquire. The doctor and vet props will help my children visualize a career path they could choose later in life. The Learning Center Literacy Kits will help me introduce a new career path to them as well as guide them in their learning by teaching them new vocabulary words to use. Dramatic Play Writing Boxes will also encourage children to build on their reading and writing skills.
Think about any child you know and the imagination that they hold.
For some children, play is their escape from all the chaos in their life at home. This project will make a difference in my student's lives by allowing them to learn through play and imagination.
