Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Did you ever want to do something and your parents said "No!" because it costs too much? My students hear that every day. Please help the parents of my students say "Yes!" to band!
I teach music to students in Pre-K to 6th grade.
My elementary school is in Illinois and 90% of the students qualify for reduced or free lunch. These students are hungry for musical knowledge and hands-on activities. I have a before-school band program that I began 4 years ago. In the beginning I received a sizable grant to purchase instruments. Many of my students come from poor families that cannot afford to rent-to-own an instrument from the local music store and buy new reeds every couple of weeks. I have school-owned instruments that the students use, but they still have to buy their own reeds, and for some families this has been a struggle.
My Project
This collection of clarinet and saxophone reeds will help relieve the financial burden of playing these instruments on my students families. I recently had a student who was struggling on his saxophone and was ready to quit. I had repeatedly asked him if he needed a new reed, but would say "No..." I finally looked at the chipped reed and asked him why he didn't ask for another one, he said he didn't have the money, so I gave him a new reed, and he was so ecstatic to realize he could really play the saxophone, it was just the old chipped reed that was holding him back.
This young man's story is a reality.
My students are afraid to ask for money for things because they know how much their parents are struggling. Many of my band parents work two or three jobs just to stay in their apartments and put food on the table. Please help me to continue giving the gift of music to these students.
