Is That A Rat Skull In That Owl Pellet?

My Students

What better way to show the science concept of predator and prey than to have children dissect an owl pellet that contains the skulls and bones of a Pocket Gopher, Rat, Vole, Mouse, or a Shrew.

I teach fourth grade in a school where over 90% of the children are on free or reduced lunch.

Many of our children come from single parent homes and a growing number of children are homeless. Our school is considered disadvantaged but I want my students to feel advantaged in having these materials to learn with.

My Project

Students would learn what an owl eats and about the owl's digestive system. They would learn a part of the natural food chain. They would also be used to teach skeletal structures of rodents. As part of the fourth grade science curriculum students are to learn about organisms and how they survive in their individual habitats. I believe that students learn best when they touch and see science unfold before their eyes. I want them to experience science with their hands and their eyes so that they come away with a love for science that will never leave them.

What an experience to have as a fourth grader.

Children would explore an owl pellet and discover the wonders of nature by examining the bones of animals that the owl ate. If children can have this hands on minds on experience with science they will not soon forget what they have learned and that information will go with them in future grades.
