My Students
Please help my first-graders access nonfiction texts!
I teach approximately 25 creative and ambitious first-graders in an urban, magnet school.
Our school's focus is humanities. In addition to learning the core subjects (reading, writing, math, science, and social studies), my students are also learning Mandarin Chinese.
Even though two-thirds of the students at my school are eligible for free or reduced lunch, our school consistently scores high on state assessments. Our students' success can be attributed to their work ethic and our school's rigorous curriculum.
My Project
Providing my students with these nonfiction read-along texts will allow them to increase their literacy skills while also acquiring content knowledge. Students will be able to listen to the books being read aloud while following along in their copies of the book. Besides increasing my students' content knowledge, these nonfiction read-aloud kits will introduce my students to new vocabulary and they will improve their understanding of nonfiction text features (for example, table of contents, glossary, photo captions, index, etc...).
I have also taken the time to carefully select books that will connect to our curriculum. "How to Dig a hole to the Other Side of the World" will connect to our science unit involving rocks and soil. Additionally, the biography of Rosa Parks will supplement our African American history unit.
Beginning readers need access to nonfiction texts, yet most nonfiction books are written at a reading level appropriate for second graders or above.
Please help my early readers begin to explore nonfiction texts by providing nonfiction CD read-along sets.
