Mrs. Tiangson from Henderson NC is requesting other through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a Differentiation of Cells kit, a Simulated Blood Typing kit, an Osmosis and Diffusion kit, a DNA Model and a DNA Fingerprinting kit to cover Biology course topics.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
How do you know if you can donate your blood to your family in need? How do you solve a crime scene?
Our school is an alternative school; students are academically behind for reasons such as being kicked out from regular schools, received jail sentences for a while, under probation or parole, over age, and other cases.
These kids experienced different types of hardships and poverty, but they still want to finish high school, obtain marketable skills, and make a better life.
The resources that I am requesting, such as "Simulated Blood Typing", "Differentiation of Cells", "Osmosis & Diffusion", "DNA Fingerprinting" and "DNA Molecular Model" will help students appreciate Life Sciences and apply it in their everyday lives the moment they wake up every morning. These laboratory resources already contain the instructions and teacher's guide for the execution of the laboratory experiments. Understanding the structure and processes in the cells that are found all over their body will help them value their very existence. Knowing their blood types and which blood types they can donate or receive is tantamount to comprehending whether they can donate their blood to their parents or their siblings. High school comprehension in simulating how to solve crime scenes through DNA Fingerprinting after an in-depth understanding of the DNA structure and model would help them acquire a lifelong learning on crime investigations using the DNA Fingerprinting kit.
Students from alternative school also deserve a chance to experience the resource benefits that a regular school does.
Budget cuts should not hinder us teachers to let students experience the wonder of Life Sciences. Students will remember the value of Life Sciences in their lives and will be forever grateful to all of you who will give them the chance to experience the lifelong learning through the materials that you will wholeheartedly donate.
