Methane Gas is a Natural for Learning About Energy

My students need a small gas cylinder, the appropriate regulator, and required safety items for storing and using methane gas for laboratory activities and demonstrations.

My Students

My Chemistry and Earth Science students use a classroom without the benches, sinks, and gas valves typical of a high school laboratory. I am continuously challenged to create labs, activities, and demonstrations that engage students within the limitations of our classroom environment.

Our students attend an Early College with a Health Science focus located in an urban setting.

The science curriculum consists of Earth Science in 9th grade and Biology and Chemistry in 10th. Students gain their remaining required science credits in college classes. It is important that they have laboratory experiences that prepare them for their college science classes by the end of 10th grade.

My Project

The methane gas cylinder and regulator will allow students to participate in hands-on laboratory activities and view engaging demonstrations that illustrate energy as a conserved, substance-like quantity present in every system of particles. Students will be able to examine what happens when sufficient energy is added to overcome the interactions between particles that comprise solids. The concepts of energy storage and transfer can be elucidated, as well as the role of energy when systems undergo change. Specific example of the use of methane in Chemistry instruction include the products of combustion, flame chemistry, exploding can demonstration, foaming methane bubbles, methane balloons, and methane/oxygen explosion. The safety items are necessary, of course, to ensure safe storage of methane tank to ensure the well-being of both students and faculty.

My instructional approach is based on the constructivist model with an emphasis on inquiry-based cooperative activities.

Discrepant events are used to help students identify and address misconceptions. The lack of the methane gas valves typical to the high school laboratory restricts the development of laboratories, activities, and demonstrations that will engage students and cause them to challenge their misconceptions. The methane cylinder for classroom use will address this shortcoming.
