This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are fascinated and captivated by real living things. There are very limited daily opportunities to really explore life around them, face-to-face.

My students attend a center-based school for secondary students with severe disabilities.

We work on real life experiences, functional academics, social skills, communication skills, and pre-vocational skills. Most of my students have educational diagnoses that include autism and mental retardation along with physical impairments (orthopedic, visual, etc.). They enjoy hands-on activities that allow them to use their senses (i.e. sight, hearing, touch, smell).

My Project

I greatly enjoy teaching science. With continued yearly reductions in monies available to purchase classroom science supplies, I have had to curtail my plant and lifecycle units that in previous years were part of my daily classroom lessons through the school year. Students loved getting involved with watching plants grow and insects go through the stages of life, and they themselves become responsible for their plants and insects. It has been amazing to watch students take great pride in their plants when they bloomed. They were excited by ladybugs hatching and intrigued by the amazing lifecycles of butterflies.

Teaching science has been one of the greatest joys of my teaching career. Most often, my students are thought of as not being able to take on concepts and understand them. But science teaches so much! My students need opportunities that teach cause and effect, which is the basis of science lifecycles. Teaching cause and effect skills teaches life skills!
