My students attend a center-based school for secondary students with severe disabilities. We work on real life experiences, functional academics, social skills, communication skills, pre-vocational skills and recreation/leisure skills. All of my students have educational diagnoses that include Intellectual Disabilities, Orthopedically Impaired, Autism, and Visual Impairments. These students also are non-verbal but boy do they communicate when given the right communication opportunities. My students use a variety of adaptive equipment (wheelchairs, communication devices/switches, and specialized seating/eating equipment) to function throughout their school day. They enjoy hands-on activities that allow them to use their senses (i.e. sight, hearing, touch, smell), their strengths and interest to take on new skills and continue to developing their communication skills.
