This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I want to bridge my students' technology use at home to the classroom. I want to be able to assign them assignments that will help develop their technological skills while giving them different platforms to express themselves and their learning.

My students were each awarded a desktop computer for their homes.

Each computer has been preloaded with over 50 different educational programs. My students are excited about this new way of learning but they need help understanding how to take full advantage of the new systems. My students are delightful and energetic. They also have disabilities that can make learning difficult. Our school does not have many opportunities for my students to experiment in different learning platforms. My students have said that they want to learn from computers and are always more engaged when technology is involved. They love PowerPoint presentations. So for now, we learn from slide shows as we huddle around a desktop computer in the back of the classroom. I wish I could make it a more comfortable and interactive process. One thing I have done is to build a SMARTboard of sorts with a Wii remote and a homemade infrared pen. Now we just need a projector so we could use it.

My Project

With a projector we will be able to use the interactive whiteboard program I have set up for them. This will help the learning process become more interactive and engaging for the students. I also want my students to feel empowered by what they learn. I hope that we could build up to assignments where the students create their own PowerPoint presentations to teach each other and give their learning a new voice. The flash drives would be the link between home and school. It will allow all students, even those without Internet to transfer learning from the classroom to their home computers and back to school.

This important to me because a huge piece of cultural capital that my students will need to be successful is to be technologically literate.

This project will help them learn the skills they need to one day ace their college classes and be competitive in the job market.
