My Students

The immortal words of Dr. Seuss... "My alphabet starts with this letter called yuzz. It’s the letter I use to spell yuzz-a-matuzz. You’ll be sort of surprised what there is to be found once you go beyond ‘Z’ and start poking around!” My students needs to be engaged, motivated and excited to write!

They absolutely love to write!

When I tell them Writing Workshop is over, they "boo" me, seriously! It's hysterical! My students are inquisitive, curious 6 and 7 year olds that have not had a lot of life experiences. Most of them have recent immigrant parents from Bangladesh, Pakistan and India. They struggle with our language and their literacy skills are lacking. Their parents emphasize the importance of a proper education and ensure the necessities, and rely on our public schools to provide the rest. Virtually all of our students receive free lunch. As a teacher, I offer the best learning opportunities that I can for them, but supplies are limited due to financial constraints. My students are a very friendly, caring and considerate group. I was very pleased the other day to hear from a teacher who sometimes works with my class how friendly, nice and helpful they are to each other, a rarity at my school. They are an absolute pleasure to work with!

My Project

I'm asking for a wide variety of materials to inspire, engage, motivate and challenge my students to become the best writers that they possibly can. I want them to achieve and to write for the love of writing. I would like a wide array of projects and estivates that center around writing prompts and spurring students on to better and better writing. I would like fun, engaging, bright and exciting activities that excite my students when I take them out of the boxes. There are dozens of books on my list that students will read and then be prompted and inspired to create pieces based on the events, characters and content of the book! There are bright, fun and colorful foam cubes that students can toss around my room and up and down the hall to inspire them to find ideas to write about! I would love games for students to learn through and improve their writing without them even knowing it! Individual writing centers would bring a wide array and assortment to their desks.

My students will jump up and down when they see these materials and are able to touch, feel, hold and, most importantly, use them to better their writing.

While very motivated and engaged writers, they do need help to improve their writing. As first graders right now, my students have the opportunity to start on a fantastic path to becoming excellent writers. I want them to have the tools that many of their contemporaries will be lacking to effectivly communicate through the written word.
