What's Wrong with Buffalo's Weather? :)

My students need materials that will allow us to explore the weather, and help them prepare for the NYS Regents Exam in Earth Science.

My Students

People love to crack jokes about the weather in Buffalo, especially the snow. Weather is one of the science topics my kids experience in their daily lives. They love hands-on science work, but I don't have the equipment we need to really tackle the topic.

I teach at an urban charter school in Western NY.

My students are a hard-working crew who come from disadvantaged economic backgrounds, most receiving free or reduced lunch. Their previous science classwork has often been minimal and not hands-on. They are curious and love getting down and dirty in the science lab!

My Project

I am hoping to set up an in-class weather data collection station for my students. A wireless weather station will allow us observe and track temperature, barometric pressure and other variables, linking the numbers to the weather we can see outside our classroom window. Barometers, thermometers and psychrometers will allow students to learn about dew point and relative humidity.

As a charter school, we work with only 80% of the funding of traditional public schools.

We work hard to provide our students with a rich educational experience, and these science materials will help my students this year, and in years to come. Help my students compete!
