My students need hands-on math games, such as Conceptual Bingo and other game sets on fractions, algebra, and integers, that will enrich their learning and allow them to work together.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"The essence of mathematics is not to make simple things complicated, but to make complicated things simple." -S. Gudder
I truly believe I teach the most diverse group of students in the country.
If you look around my classroom, you will see faces that tell stories you and I may not understand. My students come from all walks of life, so what makes my classroom so special? The balance is so great that it is hard to tell the difference between the doctor's child and the child who doesn't have the money to go to the doctor.
These kids work so well together that one would never know their background. Seeing these kids mesh the way they do would give hope to anyone wondering if the world will ever come together.
My Project
As part of an enrichment period, I spend an hour a day with a group of my students trying to get them to fall in love with math. This is not a time of lecturing or instruction, it is a time for students to work together and understand math through hands-on activities and games.
The items requested would allow me to put students into groups and play probability games with dice. They could learn integers by playing the board games and card games. They would be able to get a better understanding of percents, decimals, and fractions through the board games and Bingo. Giving students another way to learn would allow me to facilitate their learning and not lecture them.
Each and every day, I look for new ways to reach my children.
From creating my own Bingo game to making note cards with negative and positive numbers on them, I try and create activities that would allow my kids to learn in a more exciting way. These games would allow me to group students based on what they are struggling with and focus more on a particular concept. I believe the kids would thoroughly enjoy these games and even remember the concepts better.
