This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have a high population of students who are trying to gain proficiency in the English language. We all understand that reading provides access to education content. Students who are English language learners need all the reading support that they can get. That's where music class can help.

I am privileged to teach middle school students.

The majority of my student's are Asian and Hispanic as well as other ethnic minorities. Our middle school is situated in a high poverty area in central California. My students are very talented. Some of them play multiple instruments. Many of these students sing beautifully. Some of these students read music marginally well, but their basic music reading ability needs to gravitate to proficient reading ability. Competency breeds confidence.

My Project

The ability to project the music on a screen so that they can play it will be huge. " Smart Music" software records student's performance and highlights in red the notes that were played or sang incorrectly. As students are reading the music a cursor glides across the page from beat to beat. This reinforces the fact that students are to tap the beat as they read notes from left to right across the page. As the student's sight reading gets better, there music performances sound better. Students take great pride in their performances and they desire to perform more. Most importantly, they sound better because their skill in music reading is better. Music research supports a correlation between years of music study and increased SAT scores.

My students more than anything need to be proficient in reading music.

Music reading supports better reading in language arts. I've been trained that this is the role of the music educator in promoting English language acquisition. I take this role very seriously, and I want my students to have every opportunity to succeed. If my students improve their reading, they can play more sophisticated music. They will also be able to read better in all content subject areas.
