Enriching Our Students' Vocabulary

My students need 25 thesauruses to help enrich their vocabulary and to write and speak more vividly and specifically

My Students

The majority of my students use texting as their preferred method of written communication. I believe that this has had a negative impact on their spelling and their vocabulary. Language allows us to communicate our ideas, emotions and access the learning that the world has to offer.

My students are average 6th graders at a public charter school in a small town near Denver, Colorado.

They love to play video games, play with friends, and Text. Their knowledge of the English language is shockingly weak and their vocabulary is extremely limited. They know little history of their own language and the language and culture of other countries. I believe that the study of language will help reveal our past to them and how our language has developed from other languages and cultures. This will give them a greater understanding of who they are and how everyone in the world is interconnected. Even though technology has made our world smaller, we still seem not to understand others. I believe that much of who we are is revealed through language.

My Project

Since I teach writing, I would like to facilitate my students in developing a more extensive and richer vocabulary, not only for their writing, but also to help them understand the textbooks in other classes and generally deepen their ability to communicate. Often, we meet people for the first time through their writing and without a mature and appropriate vocabulary we may not be able to demonstrate the full breadth of our knowledge. Having sufficient, appropriate resources right at hand in the class allows students the convenience of a thesaurus and, hopefully, through training, students will begin to see this fascinating resource as an essential tool.

I believe that being a learned person is essential for a happy and productive life. The United States is no longer #1 in the world.

Our students have fallen behind. Being able to communicate both orally and through writing are skills we need to assist our students in developing. In order for our schools and teachers to be effective in the classroom, they must have the necessary tools. A thesaurus is just one of those tools. Effective and engaging writing should not be a relic of the past.
