My Students
Our school celebrated it's 50th Birthday last year, making it the oldest school building in the district. Our home state of Alaska celebrated it's 50th year only a year before! The classrooms are very short on useful, modern, organizational features such as and shelving and cabinetry.
This Title I school serves a very diverse and low-income population.
Children often live in hotels, in cramped spaces with extended families or in shelters. So often they have little to no choices, little to no privacy. In spite of their background though, they are full of drive and motivation. They want to succeed! As first graders, my student are so very excited about learning. They are sponges for stories, concepts, vocabulary, facts.
My Project
I am asking for a large, shelving unit in order to establish a math and literacy choice area for students. Currently, I only have space to pull out 1-2 choices at a time and only when I know ahead that our schedule will allow for "choice time." I would like to have many choices, always available. This will be used by the child who completes work ahead of the others, by the frustrated child who needs to be alone for a while and make some independent, empowering choices, by the child who needs repeated exposure to a skill in order to fully grasp the concepts.
I would like to be able to have both math and literacy activities out on display for children to choose.
When offered choices, children instinctively choose activities at a level they need. Some mornings, life seems rough and they need something simple that will reinforce their competence and control. Some days they want a challenge, something that will stretch their brain! My classroom needs more shelving in order to allow children to work where they need in order to master a skill.
