My Students

Despite the fact that my students do not have access to high-quality art materials or much time for specialized art instruction, they are truly creative and innovative in their creations. I want to show off their skills with an end of the year Art Show.

I teach 6th grade at an extremely diverse, but extremely low-income Title I school that serves K-8 graders.

Unfortunately, Art Education is almost nonexistent in our school unless it is taught by classroom teachers such as myself. I strive to incorporate high-quality hands-on art projects daily! My students are extremely diverse, but our school has a very limited supply of art supplies beyond the basics of construction paper, scissors, and glue. I am constantly integrating art lessons and crafting opportunities into core curriculum every day. Unfortunately my students only receive 35-minutes a week of art instruction from the art teacher, thus I have used my art background to provide regular art lessons, including pencil and chalk drawings, brush painting, collage and graphic design.

My Project

Although I can display the art that my students create in the hallways, I want to give them a more special and professional experience with art. I would like to have them choose their best piece of work at the end of the year, have it framed, and displayed where more than just classmates can view their creations. Thus I propose and End of the Year Art Show, giving students the opportunity to share and reflect on what they have learned about art in an academic setting. I remember how much I appreciated my own mom taking me to an art store and picking out quality art supplies, such as pencils, pens, and sketch paper. I want my students have to have the same opportunity to work with real art materials and realize art goes beyond yarn and finger painting. They should have the chance to experiment, explore, share, and reflect.

Our students' opportunities are so limited due to financial constraints.

This project will build confidence and remind everyone about the power of creativity. Not only are we incorporating more art education into the classroom, but we are supporting the cultural diversity and school spirit of our neighborhood.
