My Students

Have you ever just wanted to let your mind wander and forget about the real world for awhile? That's what a book can do for a reader, as long as it's the right book for the reader.

My students are 8th graders at a small, urban New York school.

They are mostly Hispanic and come from low income backgrounds. My students have to climb five flights of stairs to get to our school, the third school in our building. Some of my students' commutes are as long as an hour and a half each way. Many of them also come to school an hour early four days a week to take a high school level math course in the hopes of getting ahead.

My Project

Every day after lunch my students have 25 minutes of silent sustained reading (SSR). There's clearly a divide between students who enjoy this time and students who are bored. It's hard to get students to enjoy leisure reading when there are few books in' our classroom library that really pique their interest. A craze is currently sweeping the nations teens and tweens. Everybody seems to have vampire fever, my students included. However, the books in our class library are ones that have been there for years. It's time to freshen it up and get some books that can really help them become engrossed in reading.

Reading is an essential skill.

For that reason only, it is necessary for me to make sure my students have access to books that interest them and will improve their reading levels. However, as a lover of books it's also important to show them what satisfaction a person can garner from finishing a book and wanting to pick up another one. Please help me give these experiences to my students.
