My Students

Can meaningful learning occur with no meaningful tools? My students don't think so! In our classroom, we use all sorts of tools and ideas to learn and grow. But budgets and lack of resources have left these students wanting more!

My students are first graders from a rural area in North Carolina.

We are a very small Pre-K to 5th grade school - 180 students total. Jobs in the area have been scarce in the last few years and budgets have been shrinking. This group loves learning and will work and work and work! I'm always impressed with their excitement. They love new and exciting ways of learning. They have just started taking Reading Counts tests all by themselves and I could not be prouder. These kids deserve to have all the resources possible. They have a hunger for reading and learning that is sometimes rare. I do not want them to lose this! As a teacher, I am always working to come up with fun and innovative ways to make learning more meaningful.

My Project

I am requesting MP3 players/recorders for numerous reasons. My mind starts racing when I think about all the exciting ways that these could be used in our first grade classroom. Podcasts about the class spelling bee, audio invitations to parent nights, math problems for their neighbor to solve...the list could go on and on! The major use for these however will be in a reading/listening center. I would like for students to practice reading a book before recording themselves on the MP3. They can then go back and listen to themselves. After listening and following along in the book, the story can be erased and the next student will be able to start new. What a way to work on decoding skills and of course fluency! I think that it would really encourage students to work on their reading so that they can "record" a great reading session.

Technology in the classroom broadens the horizon of every student that comes in contact with it.

The world is full of it and we are becoming more and more fluent with all that technology offers. I hope to give my students the opportunities to use and become comfortable with these tools. Integrating technology in the classroom should become one with the curriculum. Using the MP3 players with so many different aspects of the curriculum exhibits the usefulness in a classroom.
