My Students

In a multi-aged Montessori classroom it has been difficult to fill the classroom library. We have many hand-me-down books that are in fair condition, but I want to empower and motivate my students to read current and award winning literature at an appropriate age level.

In the state of Colorado, I teach at a public school that has two different teaching tracks - Montessori and Core.

I teach in a Montessori setting with nine 1st graders, nine 2nd graders, and nine 3rd graders. These students are highly motivated to challenge themselves whenever they approach a difficult task. They have a creative imagination and thrive on current trends in their education.

My Project

Books that have been requested will not only support the student's journey through literacy, but will expose them to current literature. Currently, we have a functional library filled with generous hand-me-downs from parents, students, and coworkers. However, many of these books are not age-appropriate nor are they up-to-date with this generation of learner's. With these books, I plan to design monthly themes, showcase students favorite readings, have student read aloud, and much more. Additionally, I plan to incorporate many award winning books into my everyday teachings. Currently, we are studying Angela Johnson's books. We are using her craft to support the kind of writing we do in our own writings. My learner's are truly enjoying having an author as a mentor. Reading takes these young minds to a place of imagination where they can create a movie in their head. I want to support this experience as much as I can!
