My Students

Can you remember your elementary school days? Running in the school playground, shooting baskets on the basketball court? Playing volleyball, baseball or soccer.... For my kids this is not what they will remember from their primary school days.

The snow keeps falling in New York City.

This means my students are not going outside for gym or for a walk in the community. They need a recreation option to ward off cabin fever. I currently teach special education students, the majority of whom are on the autistic spectrum. The nature of their disability affects their education, social and athletic opportunities. Our urban setting also means most live in apartments which don't have room for a ping pong table. Our kids would love to be able to learn how to play and we'd love to experience some fun time together.

My Project

A ping pong table will do wonders. My school shares a building with a general education school. This means that gym space is limited to the small Adapted Physical Education gym in the photo. Unfortunately my students don't have recess or access to the big gym in the building. Therefore they spend most of their time in their classrooms- some of which are pretty small. Having a ping pong table will allow students to enjoy the remainder of their lunch period using their social and athletic skills playing an authentic and wholesome activity. It is really unfortunate that my students are not lucky enough to have enough space at school or home. A ping pong table would be very beneficial for my class and would bring fun and fitness into their lives. With this table we can make best use of the extremely limited space.

We have great kids and a dedicated staff.

Our kids social opportunities are limited by their disability as well as lack of transportation, often impacting parents' ability to access outside recreational opportunities. Help bring fun and fitness into their lives.
