Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember getting asked questions like, "How many square pyramids does this picture have?" or "What happens when you add two groups of ten together?" or even "Can you find the next item in this growing pattern?"
My students have great minds - but not a ton of background knowledge.
I'm hoping that through the use of stories the challenging math concepts we are asked to teach will become more accessible for all of my students.
Our school serves a diverse population of high-poverty students. Many of my students come from families that do not have parents that have a large bank of math skills or vocabulary. Through the use of these books, I hope to broaden their background knowledge and ability to tackle math.
My Project
I notice in my classroom when I tell a story - the children are engaged, thinking and ask questions.
I'm hoping that with these wonderful math-based books I will be able to inspire those thinking skills in our math time!
Who doesn't like to start out the day with a good story?
This project is important to me because in today's world - employers are looking for people who can think, analyze, apply knowledge and understand complex concepts.
If we begin in First Grade - who knows how far these kids can soar!
