Califone Wireless Listening Makes a Big Difference

My Students

When I started teaching at this school, the listening center was on its last leg. Another teacher gave me a cassette player, but it is no longer working. Currently I use a personal CD player which just isn't as effective as the 6 person wireless music maker I request funding for today.

The students in our school come from a wide range of communities in an extremely rural area.

We routinely turn students away who are not zoned for our area but want to go to our school because of our academic reputation. We have great students coming out of our school making huge impacts in the world, however, they don't all get the same options due to abilities. The fact that we are a poverty stricken community makes it even more difficult for our students to rise out of this area and become successful.

My Project

We lost the majority of our school building in a tornado and we watch daily as a new building is erected behind our modular classrooms. The students are excited as are the teachers and administrators. However, as adults, we also know that because a lot of funding is required to even handle the construction, we are limited with our resources. We generally receive very little supply money from the school district and have to depend on the community, the parents and our PTO. I have requested the Califone Music Maker Wireless Listening Center. I have a large number of books on CD and cassette that I have purchased since the tornado. A listening center in First Grade is essential to the success of the children.

This project is important because first graders are on the verge of their biggest learning experiences in reading.

The Califone makes it possible for students who are not working directly with the teacher the option of increasing their reading skills on their own as well as in a group. By helping my class acquire a Califone, students will have access to the Califone for many years, thus making this valuable for years to come.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
