This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Imagine that you are teaching a classroom of bright middle school students who are struggling to read on grade level, but have worked very hard to achieve the literacy goals set for them. Imagine how motivating a popular fiction title would be to these students to keep them reading.
We serve a high poverty community of students where less than 30% of the student body is reading at a proficient or advanced level.
The kids have been very receptive to changes in the curriculum this school year, but they are also growing a little fatigued with the sustained intensive efforts to bring them to grade level. Add in a little measure of mid-year doldrums, and it is clear that we need something highly motivating to keep them moving in the right direction. The kids are constantly requesting that we provide them with the titles currently popular with their age group. This might be just the ticket to sustaining forward momentum!
My Project
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins has become one of the best-selling titles for children with two more in the series, social media galore, and a movie inspired by the book coming out soon. This is by far the most requested book we hear about from our middle school students. Wait lists at public libraries are long and unfortunately just popping into a local store to purchase one is not an option for most of our students.
None of this would guarantee a successful and academically enriching classroom read though unless the book was well-conceived and written which it is. It will provide for not only a chance to capture the joy of reading but a reinforcement of other language arts components that the children are studying this year.
Everyone needs an occasional dose of extra motivation, children and adults alike.
A class read of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins could provide that extra push over the mid-year hump that we seem to require right now, convince the students that the adults are listening when they make special requests, and very quietly push some of the necessary literacy skills required by our great kids.
