My students need math materials such as big tape measures, magnetic numbers fishing set, and many other activities used to teach money, measurement, and number sense.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
To help students effectively learn something and hang on to it, it's important to have them use a variety of senses - hearing, seeing, and touch. Basically, the more ways they learn something, the more neural pathways are created in their brain and ownership of the skills increases.
My 5 year old kindergartners are just beginning their formal educational journey and I want it to be a wondrous experience for them, one that will hook them on learning.
The initial testing of the students showed that each one scored low in Math. As such, they really need a rich and dynamic learning environment.
The vast majority of my students are growing up in poverty and have had limited exposure to letters, numbers, being read to consistently, and so forth. I am already seeing gains, but better materials would show an even greater boost and help them move from low to proficient and hopefully, advanced scores! They need materials that will allow them to explore and build their repertoire of vital math skills through sight, hearing, and touch. These hands-on materials will do just that!
My Project
When students practice their math skills using the Tactile Numbers Match-Ups, which have tactile numbers they can see and feel along with a representation of that amount of objects, they would also be also be taught to pair it with a song we sing in class to help us learn our numbers. With such an activity, they are learning the information through different parts of their brain and connecting neural pathways. This begets stronger and richer connections for those and other skills.
I think of it this way: developing those neural pathways are not only building their brain up for those skills, it's building a healthier, stronger brain in general. Once you unlock the world of learning to students, especially those who haven't had many rich experiences, they fall in love with life long learning. Their eyes light up, their faces beam.
When we think about how people escape the cycle of poverty - a support system, a love of learning, healthy thought patterns, & an awareness of possibilities outside what they typically see, are vital.
These materials will be key to developing that love of learning and will help elucidate the children's mathematical understanding.
Each ah-ha moment children have when engaged in interesting educational activities, serves to hook them on a life-long pursuit of learning!
