My students need a variety of novels to use in literature circles. The mix of novels I have requested will get readers with various interests involved in reading.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When I ask my students in the beginning of the year what their biggest fear is, I expect to hear things like: tests, pop quizzes, writing essays, homework. When I hear reading as the #1 answer, I am shocked. Yet this is the situation I have found myself in for the past few years.
My students have been tested and re-rested.
They have been pushed and prodded and the results have come in spreadsheets, letters, bar graphs. Almost any format you can think of. The bottom line--they cannot read well. Most read at about a 5th grade level. Yet, even though they are tested over and over to confirm this sad truth, little is done to correct it. Little time and effort is put toward reading in the public school system. The great books aren't purchased; instead more testing programs are bought. The time isn't set aside to read and talk to friends about it; instead the time is for mandated testing and analyzing those same test results--the ones that say my students need more help reading.
Since I've decided to make time for this cause, there have been big changes in my classroom and in the lives of the kids I teach.
My Project
These novels are all highly recommended. These are books that will provoke discussion, thought, and GASP!, writing.
I will use these novels in literature circles so that many students will have the chance to read them in groups and talk about them with their peers. I will also dovetail reading skill instruction lessons into the literature circles, so that the learning is both independent and guided.
This project may be the last chance for many of these kids to learn to read on their own.
To read for a purpose. To feel empowered. The testing in public schools won't change but this project will help show my kids that there is so much more than reading for a test. For those who are struggling it will instill in them a deeper love of independent reading.
