What is war? Every generation has been defined by a war. My students will grow up knowing so little about the war that is defining them. We are a school that is blessed with technology, but because of this, our district will not purchase books for our students.
Our school is a STEM school that focuses on technology and engineering.
Most students receive free or reduced lunch and will be the first people in their family to attend college. They have chosen our school because it provides a safe environment and promises to help them gain college admission through honors, AP, and college courses. Our school keeps them away from the gang members that attend our district's other schools. I have taught in these other schools, and while I appreciate their sheltering, I also feel that the bubble we have created for them keeps them from more than just gang temptations. We study current events in my class and they are amazed at the events going on around the world.
My students need to understand the world they are about to become a vital part of, and this includes understanding the men and women who are fighting in the military. Class copies of Sunrise Over Fallujah will help our study. Walter Dean Myers is one of the best young adult authors of all time. His novel, Sunrise Over Fallujah takes the reader through a vivid portrait of the lives of the men and women who are fighting in Iraq. We have just finished studying the events of September 11th and how they have changed America, both politically and culturally. As we study this novel, we will examine the story of Pat Tillman, Bob Woodruff, and soldiers who come home and have to struggle with prosthetic limbs, financial difficulties, PTSD, and suicidal tendencies. As a part of our engineering focus, we are going to look at the technology that allows so many of these men and women to come home alive. In addition to military technology, we will look at the part that medical engineering plays in giving these men and women parts of their lives back.
These resources will help to foster culturally-aware young people.
These students may choose to join the military, but regardless, they need to know about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and how America is handling the war at home. I want them to study the issues surrounding the war and make their own informed opinions that they can defend for themselves.
