Our school is a STEM school that focuses on technology and engineering. Most students receive free or reduced lunch and will be the first people in their family to attend college. They have chosen our school because it provides a safe environment and promises to help them gain college admission through honors, AP, and college courses. Our school keeps them away from the gang members that attend our district's other schools. I have taught in these other schools, and while I appreciate their sheltering, I also feel that the bubble we have created for them keeps them from more than just gang temptations. We study current events in my class and they are amazed at the events going on around the world.
