Making Good-For-You Smoothies

My Students

My students study cooking, eating healthy and preparing our own food often. We do have vending machines for the kids to purchase from during snack but even water is expensive. This would make a great snack for our children instead of the sugary drinks and snacks they often bring from home.

My students all live in rural areas and most are knowledgeable about gardens and food prep.

Because we are also in a relatively poverty-stricken area, many families depend on what comes from their gardens and do so well into the winter. The vending machines do not have sweet syrupy drinks in them but they are expensive. Thus, many of my students end up bringing snacks that aren't healthy. We could use the blender to create our own smoothies and learn more about healthy eating.

My Project

I've requested a blender for my classroom along with 2 sets of books that we can read to enhance the experiment. Since my classroom and that of some of the other primary grades are pushed aside from the rest of the classes, we could share the blender between the six classrooms to get maximum use. Several years ago I did a few cooking projects in my classroom but slowly, as the number of children increased, the extra activities decreased. Now that we have our numbers back under control, I look forward to using a blender to make healthy smoothies for the children at snack time. I have also requested two books to help teach the children more about the actual mixing of the smoothies and fresh foods, and one about healthy eating.

My project is important for the very reasons I have already mentioned, our children are familiar with cooking what they grow in their garden but often times they turn to sugary snacks out of habit.

And, because the items in the vending machines often aren't much better for them, we could help teach the children about making healthy choices. Many of the children and parents turn to the vending machines for convenience.
