Teaching The Importance of Water

My students need Gatorade to learn how to properly hydrate without turning to soda, juices and other drinks which aren't as healthy as water.

My Students

Although we have water fountains in the building, I'm not sure that's the safest way for our children to remain hydrated. Additionally, our room is as far from the actual water fountain as any room can get.

The first grade students in my classroom are fortunate that we have a lavatory in our room.

We could easily allow the children to drink more water in the classroom, if we were closer to a source. I'm not sure the water fountain, albeit far away, is even the most germ-free way to help students learn about remaining hydrated. Most of the students aren't tall enough to drink from the fountain without putting their mouth on it.

My Project

I have asked for a cooler and water bottles. We have easy access to an ice machine so I could fill each morning and then fill with water so the students have the option of drinking at will. As it is, we are left to drink from the fountain on our way to and from physical education. We are self-contained in every facet so the only time the students leave the room is to go to physical education, the library or computer lab. Naturally, each child wants to stop by the fountain on the way back from physical education, but again, they aren't tall enough to actually safely reach it.

The students in our area are constantly bombarded by soda, juice and other flavored drinks.

With the passing of the Nutrition Bill this past month, I hope that we can start to offer better options. We do have water in our vending machines, however, it is extremely expensive so many kids end up choosing juice. Parents are more likely to send soda or koolaid to prevent purchasing bottle of water from the machine.
