Can you remember the first time you listened to a story on tape? Or maybe, the first time your parent read you a story? A listening center can provide an excellent opportunity for students to experience stories being read to them and share this experience with their friends and classmates.
My students are third graders attending a small, rural school in Eastern North Carolina.
The school that they attend is high poverty and many of the students miss out on some of life's great opportunities. They have a heart for learning and love feeling successful in their education. The students really enjoy independent learning time and part of this time is spent at a listening center. It is truly a joy to see the delight on their faces when they are successful readers!
My Project
Providing my students with access to materials will allow for so many of my struggling readers to listen to stories, while having their own copy with which to follow along. This will give them the opportunity to read higher level texts with a strong support system, while I am working one on one with other students. The students will be able to confidently participate in discussions of texts that may have been a higher level than they are accustomed to reading. This donation will contribute to reader stamina by helping the readers learn an appropriate pace for chapter book reading and will hopefully inspire them to try other chapter books on their own. I hope that my students' love for reading and ability to read will improve with the addition of these books to our classroom collection.
